The Rain in Spain SHOULD stay firmly on the plain!
Instead, having had no rain for several months, it chose to put in an unwelcome appearance during the evening at our open air venue at Bistro Del Mar. Fortunately the diners and staff were quickly able to move the tables to a more sheltered area and whet the appetites for what was to come later.
Earlier the 84 guests, supporters and helpers proved the BATman strategy had paid off handsomely. Ticket holders had been invited to bring along a choice of either cat food, dog food or treats, and the response was brilliant in that 3 x 20 kilo sacks were filled. There will be much tail wagging and purring at the kennels this Christmas. Thank you.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted by Hazel, Kennel Manager, with her photo display of K9 History of many of the dogs and cats who had been rescued and re-homed over the past several years. A second display featured the guys who are in the kennels at present and would like a new home. More information is at www.k9tenerife.com or email at info@k9tenerife.com
Helpers managed to persuade supporters to part with their euros and there was a lot of activity between acts with the Tombola, Raffle ticket sales, Stand Up Sit Down Bingo and Name the Dog which all generated much needed funds. Thanks go to the many generous people who donated Maya vouchers, Freebird trips, Submarine trips, Showtime extravaganza trips, Cuddly toys, Books, Booze and a giant Hamper full of Christmas goodies.
The 7 Auction Lots provided a lot of interest, the highlight being a ceramic feline clock which raised €100 and Plates of Jack Russell Terriers, West Highland Terriers, a 2 hour personal fitness session from Danni Byrne and a 3 hour House clean by the Pink Mop, all met their reserves. Thanks again.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation to Dave McKenna of a Certificate of Appreciation. The K9 President, Elsie Clinton-Leslie detailed the significant work that Dave & Gloria had done over several years in trapping and rescuing cats, and latterly his work in building (single handedly) a cattery adjoining the kennels. It is so comfortable, the cats don’t want to move out!
Dave was roundly applauded and for the first time ever, was lost for words.
4 hours of entertainment was provided by Billy Porter, who toned down his act because children were present, but still managed some risqué but enjoyable fun.
John Ashford’s Buddy Holly Appreciation Show is always popular and this brought the dancers on to the floor to shake their hips and other bits.
Compere Aidy Evans kindly contributed his equipment for the evening and sang his 60’s and 70’s gems in between the other acts and did a sterling job on the night.
Rosemary Eden is a big hearted lady with an even bigger voice and the evening was rounded off by Jesse Garon and this brought the dancers to the floor again, with a range from Country to Rock and all things in between. Jesse has become a stalwart of charity gigs over the years and his love of dogs is massive.
K9 cannot thank the artists enough for their contributions, freely given and fondly appreciated.
The Carvery was excellent as is usual from this venue and the staff very attentive. It is in a very good position overlooking the sea at Fanabe and should attract more customers than it does.
The event raised a fabulous €1289 plus all the food donated for the animals at K9. With the Gala Evening at Starlight Bar on 17th November raising over a €1000 much needed funds have been generated.
Though much of this will go into the day to day pot of necessary expenses such as vet bills, kennel rent and water charges etc., it is hoped a small amount will be spent on a more permanent wooden canopy at the kennel entrance to shelter the caged dogs from the sun (and rain!)
Thanks to everyone who contributed to a successful evening.
BATman strategy is the Bring A Tin man!

Margaret won the ‘Guess my name’ competition at our Gala Evening
The name was ‘Gemma’
There was a full house and several more seated outside at Starlights Bar at Coral Mar Square in Costa Del Silencio, to appreciate the many talents appearing.
The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness and money to support the abandoned dogs and cats at the K9 kennels in San Miguel. Througout the evening, overhead monitors showed images of the dogs and cats whom are currently at the kennels and was a visual reminder of what the evening was all about.
Eight acts were kind enough to donate their time and talents to this worthy cause.
First up was Stan Fraser who gave his version of the Sinatra classics, followed by John Ashford with his brilliant Buddy Holly Appreciation Show. This had the audience either foot tapping or rocking on the dance floor.
Christine Kay belted out songs that suited her style to perfection. Over the years she has become a favourite to K9 audiences with her extraordinary talent.
The interval provided respite and the Buffet generously provided by Gareth went down a treat.
Ian Anderson kicked off the second half with his songs from the Shows, ranging from Chicago to Phantom of the Opera. Such is the strength of Ian’s voice, that much of his act was performed without a microphone. His rendition of Nessum Dorma to close his ‘spot’ is always worth listening to.
Jesse Goran provided a wide variety of old favourites ranging from Country & Western to Rock & Roll. This gave the line dancers the opportunity to show their skills on the dance floor and a solo performance from Pat the Cat ( 3 months after a hip replacement) was loudly applauded. Jesse in particular, regularly reminded the audience of the reason why money was needed for K9 and invited them to dig deeper into their pockets and handbags.
Rosemary Eden had a touch of the Bette Midler about her and her trademark rapport with male members of the audience went down well with those on the receiving end!
It was now 12.30am and raffles were drawn and prizes distributed to the lucky winners.
Sadly, once this was completed, the majority of people decided it was time to go home and the final act of the night, Aidy Evans, performed to only a handful of patrons. This was a shame because his 60’s and 70’s tribute was a delight and gave us young elderly the opportunity to sing along to many classics.
Mike Edwards held the whole show together with his usual witty and workmanlike performance.
We raised €1000, thanks goes to lots of people, principally the artists, the young & attractive bar staff, Gloria & Dave who arranged the show, K9 helpers and supporters, and the patrons who turned up and were generous with their cash towards raffles, tombola, book sales, etc.
An excellent 5 hour show of none stop entertainment, widely appreciated
